I’ve seen people talking about how amazing it is that so many
women have spoken at the DNC and RNC and I know I will get shit for this but I
am not as excited about it. I am actually quite annoyed. As I write this I am
listening to Sandra Fluke speak and the first thing I did when I heard what she
was saying was roll my eyes. Knowing how much mud has been slung in this race
already I am likely just cynical. But as I hear her list off passive aggressive
attack after attack against the actions of republicans without directly calling
them out I am annoyed. It feels fake. Like Barack Obama coming out and saying
that women are not a special interest group. Fake. So very fake. I feel
pandered to. I feel like they think I am too stupid to see that they are
attempting to rouse my fury against their opposition so that I vote for them. I
feel used that they just toss a woman on the stage have her say their message
and feel that they are giving a voice to women. It is even worse when the
Republicans do it. We know what you think of women. I am not talking about that
stupid war on women shit. I am talking about the benevolent misogyny. I am
talking about attempting to tie a woman to her uterus and putting motherhood on
a pedestal. These groups are trying to show that they care about women and want
to include women in the shallowest way possible. Using these issues, the
concerns about the rights of women to get votes and to sling more mud at your
competition is just tiring and infuriating. I am sick of being a woman and I just
want to be regarded as a human. Until gender is as meaningless as hair color we
will not see real change. I do not need affirmative action, I need to be taken
seriously and spewing bullshit and expecting me to be grateful for it makes me
feel like less than the adult that I am. Just quit it already.
The best part is the description of the video on youtube:
Women's rights advocate Sandra Fluke addresses the 2012 Democratic National Convention, touting President Obama's focus on women's rights and the two futures American women face.I do not know whether to laugh because they wrote out the clearly propaganda purpose of the speech right into the official description or cry because this is as close as we have to a woman's rights advocate at the DNC.

Wow. I've never seen it through your perspective, but now that you mention it - you're very right. But I suppose that in politics some men are in the same boat as women in the sense that they can't really express their genuine opinion. They can only express the general view of their party, which is usually drafted by someone else other than themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that and I realize that everything is scripted when it comes to politics but I feel like for men it is the issue itself that is scripted. So it is appealing to your patriotism or your intelligence or your status as a working american or a teacher. It just feels so insulting that the only way they target women is through either a) motherhood or b)their sexuality. It is like the see nothing else as applying to women.
